Celebrating the Chinese New Year and Valentine’s Day in Darwin

The 5th of February marks the beginning of a new year on the traditional Chinese calendar. Referred to as the Spring Festival in modern China, it is one of several Lunar New Years in Asia.
This new year brings about the Year of the Pig, an animal that in Chinese culture is a symbol of wealth. Here’s hoping it’s a sign of things to come for everyone this year!
To celebrate this special occasion, the Loong Fong Chinese Seafood Restaurant at Novotel Darwin Airport, a Darwin local favourite for over 20 years, will be putting on a special 4 course banquet for $55 per person from the 4th -19th February. Bookings for this require a minimum of 4 adults. Bookings can be made directly to Loong Fong on (+08) 8920 3333
Starting on the 5th of February, Cossies Poolside Bar and Bistro at the Mercure Darwin Airport Resort will also be offering a Chinese New Year dinner special of honey and chilli prawns served with steamed jasmine rice for only $35.
If you’re not in Darwin for the 5th of February, the Chung Wah Society of the Northern Territories will be hosting the inaugural community festival celebrating the Chinese New Year in Darwin on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th. Taking place at the Darwin Turf Club, there will be loads of entertainment, entry is free, and food and drinks will be available for purchase at a great selection of stalls.
February 14th sees the recognition of Valentine’s Day, also referred to as Saint Valentine’s Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine. Around the world, the day is recognised for its cultural and religious significance but is more commonly known as a commercial celebration of romance, so ladies and gents, don’t forget to order those flowers for your significant other . . . and book your table for a romantic dinner at the Mercure Darwin Airport Resort.
On offer is a delectable “aphrodisiac buffet menu” with everything from antipasto platters and oysters to tropical reef fish, and a delicious selection of desserts. This evening of romance at Cossies Poolside Bar and Bistro is just $70 per person (excluding beverages) and bookings are essential due to the popularity of the evening.
