Christmas and NYE in Darwin

2018 is drawing to a close and it’s about time to start making plans to celebrate the welcoming of 2019, and Christmas of course, and what better place to do that than in the warmth of beautiful Darwin City.

It is no secret that this time of year in the Northern Territories comes with a certain amount of wet weather, however the “wet season” also produces magnificent storms that roll across the ocean every afternoon, bringing the landscapes to life and quite a spectacle to admire. This also provides for warm temperatures with an average of 25 degrees (77F) overnight and around 33 degrees (91F) during the day.

So, if you’re planning on heading to Darwin to celebrate Christmas, see in the New Year, or both, we have a few tips for you of what’s on.

Christmas Day:

Make the most of a relaxing Christmas Day at Mercure Darwin Airport Resort. The lagoon-style pool, with it’s beautiful tropical surroundings is a superb place to spend the afternoon with a cold drink in hand, soaking in all the festivities of the day or being blissfully unawares.

New Year’s Eve Fireworks:

Pack a picnic basket and head along to the Darwin Waterfront for the NYE fireworks show. Catering to families, the first display kicks off at 9pm and then the main event, for the bigger kids, lights up the sky at midnight.

Parties and Events:

Head out on the water and enjoy the fireworks display with a VIP view. Jump onboard with Sail Darwin and take a cruise on their yacht, enjoy champagne and tapas, and celebrate in style while the crew takes care of the party.
If you’d prefer to stay on the mainland, the Dinah Beach Cruise Yacht Association will be offering up live music. A casual event, and licensed to keep the party going till 2am, it’s bound to be a cracker.

Daytime activities:

Darwin also offers a fantastic selection of activities and tours to do during the day, from exploring the National Parks to feeding crocodiles, or taking a scenic helicopter ride around the city and surrounds. Perhaps one of the most popular and unique experiences is Crocosaurus Cove, home to the “cage of death”. With some of the largest Saltwater Crocodiles in Australia and the World’s largest display of Australian reptiles, this is a truly unique attraction and one you won’t forget in a hurry.
During the school holidays, Crocosaurus Cove is also hosting its Junior Reptile Ranger Program for 7-12 year olds. This is an amazing opportunity for your young ones to get up close with the reptiles and learn all about them along the way.
