What better way to start the year than an adrenaline-filled rugby sevens tournament?
The Coca Cola Hottest 7s in the World is back in Darwin and set to kick off on January 20th. Proudly supported by the Northern Territory Government, this 3-day tournament is packed full of Rugby Sevens competitions for men, women and youth teams. As event organiser, Damien Tyson told NT News, it’s a weekend of “top athletes and high-class competition.”
This year brings a new addition of U18 Youth Girls and an increase in prize money, to a massive $85,000. That’s the largest prize pool in the southern hemisphere! This year, the Youth teams will now have a chance at prize money, with 4 divisions of prize money up for grabs.
Beginning in 1989 as the Territory Sevens competition, the event has now grown into a huge international competition, bringing in teams from New Zealand, Singapore, Japan, Fiji, South Africa and beyond. Rugby Sevens has continued to boost in popularity since it was first introduced to the Rio Olympics in 2016, and the Hottest 7s is now regarded as the biggest Sevens tournament in Australia.
In last year’s Men’s tournament, the local Darwin Stallions topped the competition, winning against Fiji’s Eagle Warriors in the Croc Final. The Stallions were captained by former All Black Zac Guildford, and fans are looking forward to seeing them defend their title in 2018.
Since the tournament opened to women in 2007, it’s not only broadened the competition, but helped encourage and grow the profile of female sevens scene in Australia and worldwide.
2017’s Hottest 7s tournament saw the Australian Women’s team come out as winners in a gripping finale. The Australian Women’s team coach, Tim Walsh, calls the tournament “one of the toughest non-World series events of the year.”
While all the games will be streamed live, you can’t beat being up close to the action. Luckily, Darwin Airport Hotels are just a short walk to the rugby field - you can’t get closer than that!
